LISTEN UP YAOI ENTHUSIASTS, I AM TIRED.
Japanese Gay Video (jgv) is NOT yaoi. Yaoi is a specific genre of anime and manga created by women for women. Its target audience is women; Its artists are, by majority, women. It does not depict relationships of gay men from the perspective of gay men. It is largely hetero-normative in its depictions. Yaoi is an idealized narrative of gay relationships from the perspective of heterosexual women. You may enjoy yaoi (i even enjoy yaoi, it’s okay to enjoy yaoi) but you must recognize that yaoi is not representative of real people. At all.
JGV is made by men. For Men. It is pornography, it is real sex. It is idealized sex, but from the perspective (mostly) of the people intended to view it. If you are a woman, you are not the target audience of JGV. That is not to say that you may not watch it and enjoy it. You certainly may. I am a woman, I run a blog dedicated to it, obviously it’s okay. But we must recognize that we are not the intended demographic. They’re not making gay porn with women in mind. Not even the heterosexual scenes that these companies release are really made for women. The reasons you may have for liking JGV are personal and legitimate. But it’s not made for us. And it’s not yaoi.
They’re not making gay porn with women in mind. Not even the heterosexual scenes that these companies release are really made for women.
One of the largest JGV companies around - Coat, markets their videos to women. That’s why they advertise in BL anthologies. They also hold fan meetings and the audience is largely female. They didn’t randomly start heterosexual series like Another Version and Straight Style just for the hell of it.
I don’t disagree with your point about yaoi being made for women by women but Coat Company, specifically, does take into account it’s female demographics.
Which is why their porn is usually terrible since it’s just a bunch of straight dudes wanting to get paid.honestly i don’t know much about coat, and I was making some generalizations for the sake of brevity, but that’s not really what the point was. Taking the female demographic into account still does not mean that their major target demographic is women. They’re not the only company that hires straight actors, either, and you can’t just assume that just because straight scenes are being produced that the scenes are intended specifically for women, even if they do advertise in BL magazines. When push comes to shove, they are banking on the demographic that they are most largely representing. Gay Men. And this is just one company. Other giants, like KO, are less ambiguous about their target demographic. Their actor pool is mostly from gay escort services that do not cater to women at all. idk. it’s just kind of a no-brainer to me that gay porn companies put gay men first and foremost. that’s all i’m trying to say.
I know you were making generalizations - that is why I specifically mentioned COAT because it is well-known that COAT does cater to its female demographics. A gay porn company… marketing to a female audience… releasing two heterosexual AV lines but that isn’t intended for women? Hmm, I think you’re arguing this just for the sake of arguing.
Obviously I don’t think COAT represents all of jgv but COAT has been around for quite some time and they are still one of the largest companies in the industry so I had to point out the fallacy of your statement. Also, considering how popular/lucrative BL is in Japan, I wouldn’t be surprised if other jgv companies wanted to bank on it as well.“gay porn companies put gay men first and foremost.”
Not the statement I was addressing/correcting.
I’ll post it one more time.
“They’re not making gay porn with women in mind. Not even the heterosexual scenes that these companies release are really made for women.”
Again,
COAT - one of the biggest gay porn companies in the business, for years, has been flailing their arms and shouting “HEY, LADIES? WE WANT YOUR MONEY. LOOK! WE’LL EVEN GIVE YOU STRAIGHT PORN!”And I bring this up because one of the main reasons as to why I started watching jgv is because I knew these companies were trying to appeal to me - a female viewer. But that’s another story.
and as I also said before “the reasons that you may have for liking jgv are personal and legitimate” but they really have nothing to do with who the target demographic is. While most gay men tend to not want to have anything to do with straight sex, there is also a sizable demographic of gay men who enjoy watching straight sex, especially straight sex starring actors they have enjoyed in gay scenes. It’s a curiosity thing for some guys, and for others it’s a fetish. So to assume that these gay companies that produce straight titles are specifically catering to straight women is a bit of a generalization itself.
Listen to yourself. Really. Because like I said before - you sound like you’re arguing this just for the sake of arguing.
1) COAT advertises in monthly BL anthologies
2) COAT recognizes its female demographics
3) Have you ever seen a COAT fan meeting? Women. Everywhere. Like 98% female audience. But Straight Style and Another Version released specifically with women in mind? Unpossible!
Come on.
“While most gay men tend to not want to have anything to do with straight sex, there is also a sizable demographic of gay men who enjoy watching straight sex, especially straight sex starring actors they have enjoyed in gay scenes.”
Yet COAT is the only jgv company that releases hetero porn… hmmmmm.
Come on.
Coat isn’t the only company that releases straight porn. Mensrush, Acceed, and KO Company have released heterosexual scenes as well, off the top of my head. just fyi. I’m not going to reiterate anything more, since you’re not listening and choosing to scoff at what I have to say on the matter.
